DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENTISTS AND PRACTITIONERS: CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

Our mission in the Chapman University Department of Psychology is to educate and train the next generation of psychological scientists and practitioners and extend the frontiers of psychological science through ground-breaking faculty and student research.

THINK CRITICALLY

Our curriculum facilitates students' development of a broad-based knowledge of psychological theory and applications, while teaching students to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply methods of psychological inquiry to address real-world challenges. Learning occurs in our classrooms, labs, and the community.

EXPERIMENT BOLDLY

Students work alongside faculty who are world leaders in their subdisciplines of expertise. Our faculty direct interdisciplinary research teams in the fields of health, social, developmental, clinical, and environmental psychology, psychophysiology, neuroscience, big data analytics, and the study of gender, sexuality, and relationships. Research partnerships involve programs in biology, engineering, computational sciences, our professional health programs, communication sciences, and the arts.

PERSONALIZED EDUCATION

Our small class sizes facilitate discussion and engagement in the classroom and strong relationships with faculty. As an undergraduate-only program, Psychology majors work directly with faculty in research and fieldwork internships. Discipline-specific career advisors ensure our students are prepared for the next stage of their educational or professional journey.

Psychology Department majors and minors have opportunities to learn and train in our faculty research labs and scientific centers, institutes, and partnering programs including:

The Center for Excellence in Biopsychosocial Approaches to Health (CEBAH) – a hub for the scientific study of mind-body processes that affect our health and well-being across the life course.

The Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences (the Brain Institute) – a nexus of interdisciplinary researchers in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, neurobiology, behavioral economics, engineering, and computational sciences.

Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Research Institute – our faculty partner with medical scientists at CHOC and other local medical centers to apply psychological principles that enhance patient care, health, and recovery.

Our university chapter of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology supports professional development in the field. Local, regional, and national Psi Chi events provide networking opportunities with other psychology faculty, students, and practitioners. Our students can also hone their leadership skills within our local Psi Chi chapter.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CONNECTIONS

The Psychology Department is housed within the Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. Psychology majors can pursue our Crean College Minor in Neuroscience for interdisciplinary training in brain sciences. Psychology undergraduates also benefit from affiliations with our Crean College graduate health programs in Marriage & Family Therapy, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Physical Therapy, and the Physician Assistant Program. Bridge programs with the Concordia University Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs facilitate acceptance of our undergraduates into these graduate programs and the opportunity to get a jumpstart on the master's curriculum during students' senior undergraduate year.

BRINGING PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE TO THE WORLD

In addition to providing students with a foundational knowledge of core areas of psychological knowledge and theory, we also believe strongly in an applied approach that addresses the role of psychology in meeting the world's current challenges. Recently developed courses focus on the environment and climate change, bias and hate crimes, big data analytics for understanding health, art, and culture, and the causes and consequences of conspiracy beliefs. We marry learning in our course classrooms to large-scale scientific endeavors, including ongoing efforts to understand the neurophilosophy of free will, as well as the mental and physical health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Join us as a Chapman University Psychology major! We look forward to changing the world with you.
