Kewanee police have increased patrols after they and officers from other agencies responded to peaceful protesters at the home of an Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) employee, according to a news release from the department.
The Kewanee Police Department received a notice about a charter bus that was transporting protestors and known gang members from Galesburg to a residence in Kewanee on Sunday, February 11, the release says. The people were protesting an issue at the Hill Correctional Center, a medium security facility for men in Galesburg, and were traveling to the home of an IDOC employee in Kewanee. The Kewanee Police Department, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Corrections responded to the 400 block of E. McClure Street to assess the location.
When the bus arrived, the people aboard were peaceful, listened to officers’ instructions and remained on public property throughout the incident, according to the release. They left the area about 15 minutes after they arrived.
The Kewanee Police Department is monitoring the situation and has scheduled additional patrols for the safety of the IDOC employee.
