Mae Martin Biography

Mae, a comedian, actor, and screenwriter, was born in Toronto, Canada on May 2, 1987. Mae’s parents raised them in a liberal utopia, where they were exposed to British classics such as Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Goon Show, and Blackadder, as well as American comedians like Steve Martin. These early influences sparked Mae’s interest in comedy and shaped their views on sexuality.

Mae started their career in Canada, performing with “The Young and the Useless” comedy troupe at The Second City comedy club. They began working at the box office and later transitioned to being a stand-up comedian. At just 16 years old, Mae became the youngest-ever nominee for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. Mae went on to write for the sketch comedy series Baroness von Sketch Show, winning two Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Series.

In 2011, Mae moved to London to pursue their dream of breaking into British comedy. They quickly made a name for themselves with their 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival show, Mae Martin: Us. This led to their own BBC Radio 4 series, Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality. Mae has also appeared on various British television and radio programs, including The Now Show and GrownUpLand.

Mae’s 2017 Edinburgh show, Dope, explored the concept of addiction beyond recreational drugs and delved into topics like love, food, sex, work, and social media. The show was based on years of research and drew heavily on the work of Dr Gabor Maté.

Dope was adapted into a half-hour Netflix comedy special in 2019 as part of the Comedians of the World collection. This success led to Mae co-creating, writing, and starring in the Channel 4/Netflix comedy series, Feel Good, alongside Joe Hampson. The series, which explores the guilt of coming from privilege, has been praised for its outstanding writing and humour.

Aside from comedy, Mae is also an author, having released a YA book in 2019 called Can Everyone Please Calm Down? A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality.

Mae’s talent and hard work have brought them international recognition. They recently signed a deal with Objective Fiction and appeared in LOL: Last One Laughing Canada in 2022. Mae also has a recurring role in the HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant, and is currently working on a “teen thriller comedy” with Netflix, as well as two films with writing partner Joe Hampson.
